Festive treat in store at Theatr Elli
It promises to be just what you need to get into the Christmas spirit.
Cor Meibion Llanelli’s annual Christmas Concert is being staged at Theatr Elli, Llanelli, on Saturday, December 17.
The show is being compered by the radio star who runs the biggest ‘Garden’ in Wales, Chris Needs, pictured above.
It will also feature soprano soloist Joy Cornock, pictured below.
“We can promises a feast of Christmas music – and one or two surprises along the way,” said Cor Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas.
“For example, we have a big surprise for one of our special guests as we have been rehearsing their favourite song.
“The Christmas Concert is always one of the highlights of the year for Cor Meibion Llanelli and there will be solos from a number of choir members, plenty of festive favourites and the audience gets a chance to get involved with some carol singing.”
Soprano Joy Cornock is a regular soloist in recitals and concerts around the UK, Spain, Germany and Ireland.
Joy has been a faithful member of the Côr Newyddion Da, performing at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The Cardiff International Arena as well as many parts of Europe.
She has appeared on television on numerous occasions including being a soloist on the S4C programmes Dechrau Canu Dechrau Canmol, Noson Lawen and Wedi 3.
The appearance of Chris Needs is a major coup for Cor Meibion Llanelli.
Choir secretary Fred Elias said: “Chris is in great demand as a performer, particularly over the Christmas period. But he was delighted to seize the opportunity of sharing a stage with Cor Meibion Llanelli.
“And I am sure the army of people who follow his radio show will be equally delighted to seize the chance of seeing a real hero of Radio Wales here in Llanelli.”
The weeknight Chris Needs show goes out in Radio Wales between 10pm and 1am. One of the key features of the show is the ‘Garden’, an on-air club of listeners.
Chris was born in Cwmafan near Port Talbot in 1954. Before joining Radio Wales, he was a star presenter for six years for independent Welsh radio. He built up a large and loyal following with his cheerful one-to-one style.
In 1996's Radio 'Oscars' he won the coveted Sony Silver Award for Best Regional Presenter.
Chris joined Radio Wales along with a host of other new presenters in August 1996, as part of a revamp of the schedules.
He began by co-presenting the mid-morning magazine programme, Live Time, and an edition of the afternoon phone-in show, The Network.
Chris now hosts his own brand of late night music and chat.
Every member of the Chris Needs ‘Garden’ has a membership number. Anyone can join and signing up means you'll receive a starter pack, badge and goody bag.
In 2005, Chris Needs was awarded the MBE. On 22 June 2005, he collected this award from Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. Some of the Garden Club members were even there with him to celebrate his momentous day.
The Cor Meibion Llanelli concert starts at Theatr Elli, Llanelli, at 7pm on Saturday, December 17.
Tickets are now available at the Theatr Elli Box Office and the advice is to book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets: £10, £5 concessions.

Cor Meibion member celebrates 50 not out!
A popular Llanelli vicar has celebrated his Golden Jubilee in the Ministry.
The Rev Vivian P Roberts is well-known as a clergyman in Llanelli - and is a stalwart member of Côr Meibion Llanelli.
Colleagues gathered to mark the 50th anniversary of Vivian’s ordination to the Priesthood.
The tributes were led by the Rev MJ Davies, who told the story -
“Among those presenting themselves for Ordination to the Priesthood at the 1961 Trinitytide Ordination in St David’s Cathedral was the Reverend Vivian Phillip Roberts, a native of the New Dock area of Llanelli and a product of the Parish of Christ Church.
“Vivian had completed his year as a Deacon under the tutelage of Canon M Llewellyn Davies in the Parish of Cwmamman, which covered the Amman Valley communities of Cwmgors, Garnant, Tairgwaith and Glanamman.
“That these were halcyon days may be judged from the fact that the four churches of the parish were staffed by the Vicar and two full time Curates!
“The young clergy of St David’s knew very well that in a predominantly rural diocese their first preferment in sole charge would be to a country parish.
“So, in 1964, alter four happy years in the Amman Valley, Vivian was asked to take up the lncumbency of Puncheston in the Welsh-speaking area of North Pembrokeshire.
“The parishioners quickly became aware of the versatility of their new Vicar, because as well as his parochial duties, Vivian soon became the official driver of the local school bus!
“In 1972 the call came for a return to the Amman Valley, this time as Vicar of Brynamrnan, (to which Cwmllynfell would be added in I977).
“lt was during his time at Brynamman that Vivian and his close friend, the Reverend Len Felton, embarked on studies for the University of Wales Degree of Bachelor of Divinity, which they both completed successfully in 1978.
“Vivian’s final parochial appointment involved the return to the Deanery of his birth and upbringing, to take up the Incumbency of the ancient Parish of ‘Penbre with Llandyry’ (Pembrey).
“Here he exercised a long and faithful ministry until his retirement in 2000, having served the Church in Wales for more than 40 years.
“Those of us who are married Priests can testify powerfully to the support and encouragement of our wives, and Vivian would hasten to acknowledge the role of Jillian as the lady of the vicarage in all of their parishes.
“Therefore, with thanksgiving to Almighty God, we join in celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Vivian’s Ordination and his Priestly Ministry, not forgetting his services in our own Benefice over the past 10 years.

Millinnium Stadium date for Cor Meibion Llanelli
Cor Meibion Llanelli (Llanelli Male Choir) will be teaming up with choirs from across Wales on Saturday to form a special 1,000 voice choir.
The choristers have been recruited by the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) to envelop the Millennium Stadium in song when Wales face the Barbarians on Saturday (June 4), kick-off 2.30pm.
“This is a real one-off occasion and something to truly behold,” said choir secretary Fred Elias.
“The power and drama created by a Welsh male voice choir in full voice is something which raises the hairs on the back of your neck.
“Putting many of the best choirs in Wales together to create a 1,000-strong massed choir is a huge event and I know that all the boys in Cor Meibion Llanelli are thrilled to be taking part.
“We’ve got one choir member in Ray Williams who knows what it feels like to represent Wales on the field of rugby.
“Singing in a 1,000-strong male voice choir is almost like a choral international for us as singers and I am sure many of the boys will be feeling the same sense of pride to represent Wales in song.”
The match is a celebration to commemorate the 130th anniversary of the Welsh Rugby Union as the game’s governing body in Wales.
The choir will assemble in the north stand of the stadium, where they will be conducted by the stadium’s feature choirmaster, Haydn James.
He has devised a special repertoire of songs for the day, which along with the favourite hymns of old will include some modern tunes as well.
The choir will also unveil a medley of songs which Mr James is preparing to honour the countries represented by the players in the Barbarian line up.
Fans will be able to hear the massed choir from 1.30pm, which is precisely one hour before the kick off.
The massed choir will also strike up during the match to raise the noise level to a massive intensity as the game unfolds.
Some of the favourite hymns and songs to be sung will include Gwahoddiad, Llanfair, Rachie, Speed Your Journey and Myfanwy.
The choir will be accompanied by the Regimental Band of the Royal Welsh which regularly features at Wales home international matches.
Haydn James said: “This should give a spectacular sound from some of the very best choirs in Wales.
“We are all absolutely thrilled that so many choirs will be sharing in this very special day.”
The full list of choirs recruited so far is:-
Llanelli Male Voice Choir, Dunvant Male Choir, Morriston Orpheus Choir, Cardiff Arms Park Male Choir, Cor Meibion Taf, Pendyrus Male Choir, Bechgyn Bro Taf, Treorchy Male Choir, Cor Meibion De Cymru, Froncysyllte Male Choir, Cor Dodre’r Aran, Cor Meibion Llangwm, Cantorion Colin Jones, Built Wells Male Choir, Cor Meibion Maesteg, Maesteg Gleemen, Cor Yr Hen Blwyf, Glynneath Male Choir, Cor y Gyrlais, Eschoir, Cor Meibion Dyffryn Aman and Risca Male Choir.
The Millennium Stadium Manager, Gerry Toms, said: “The stadium is known for its singing but this choir will make the sound extra special on the day.
“The acoustics in the bowl of the stadium are fantastic for capturing the noise of the supporters and the sound made by this excellent line up will make the hairs on the backs of people’s necks stand up.
“We have had large choirs here in the past and anyone who has experienced those occasions will know how spectacular it can be.

Pembrey date for Cor Meibion Llanelli
The Friends of Court Farm are hosting the fundraising concert at St Illtyd’s Church on Friday, May 20, at 7pm.
“We are always glad to help local causes,” said Cor Meibion Llanelli musical director Eifion Thomas.
“We have close links with Pembrey and many of our members are supportive of the bid to save one of Carmarthenshire's few remaining ancient manor houses.”
A bid is now being put together to seek cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund towards the salvation of Court Farm. The present mansion dates back to the mid-16th century, early in the reign of Elizabeth 1.
Cadw, the Welsh Historic Monuments body, has already declared the building to be of “outstanding importance” and has offered a £40,000 grant towards initial repair works.
Mr Thomas added: “We know there are great efforts being made to save Court Farm for future generations, so a concert like Friday night’s is one small way in which we, as a choir, can help the campaign.
The concert will also feature Pembrey School Choir and soprano Sarah Pottinger, a native of Pembrey who now works as a singing teacher based in Devizes. She is a graduate of The University of Oxford, and The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Tickets are available from Pembrey Post Office, Pembrey Pottery and the village school.

Visit no 8 for Shaftesbury!
The hilltop town of Shaftesbury will be alive to the sound of music on Saturday (April 30) when Cor Meibion Llanelli (Llanelli Male Choir) pay a welcome return visit.
This will be the famous Welsh choir’s eighth appearance in Shaftesbury.
Concert organiser Susan Ballett explained: “They first came at the invitation of St James Church (down over the hill in the small parish of St James), in the late 1980s and have managed to fit in return visits every three or four years ever since to the delight of everyone who hears them
“The concerts are always held in the Shaftesbury School, which is the only venue locally large enough to hold the number of music lovers who are always anxious to enjoy their very special sound.
“Under the baton of D Eifion Thomas, the choir never fails to raise the benchmark even higher.”
It is something of a tradition that the choir’s visit sees the introduction of guest artistes - usually local students on the threshold of a musical career.
This year there will be two – Daniel Bovey, who plays classical guitar, and Bryony Purdue, a soprano singer.
Tickets are priced at £12.50 and are available at Reynolds shoe repair shop at the bottom of Shaftesbury town, at Hine and Parsons opposite the Town Hall, or by ringing 01747 854294.
The concert begins at 7pm and there is plenty of car parking either at the school or in the immediate area.
Cor Meibion Llanelli musical director Mr Thomas said the choir’s programme would include a mix of traditional Welsh items alongside songs from the shows and some Negro spirituals.
“It really is a varied programme with something for everyone. We thoroughly enjoy our visits to Shaftesbury and it is a great chance to meet up with Welsh ‘exiles’ who may be feeling that ‘hiraeth’ or longing for their homeland of Wales.”

Community spirit drives charity concert
There’s a tale of great community spirit behind Cor Meibion’s appearance for a charity concert at Capel Adulam in Felinfoel, Llanelli, next week (February 18).
“It’s a story which has very poignant moments and very uplifting moments,” said chapel Minister Rev Alan Jones.
“Basically, it is about a community’s shared experience and how we come through the good times and the bad times.”
Cor Meibion Llanelli will be performing at the chapel in Adulam on Friday, February 18, and will be sharing the stage with the pupils from Ysgol y Felin, the new school in Felinfoel which has been formed by Ysgol y Babanod and the Primary school.
“It promises to be an excellent evening’s entertainment and I would hope everyone turns out to support a worthy cause because we will be raising money for the West Wales Hospital in Glangwili in Carmarthen.”
The Minister explained: “We have chosen Glangwili because it seems to feature very heavily in the lives of our chapel-goers.
“Many have benefited from treatment and major surgery at Glangwili Hospital and are with us today to pay testament to the hard work of our doctors and nurses. For others, it has sadly been the end of a journey. Take, for example, one of Felinfoel’s true gentlemen, Gerald Phillips, who was for many years the Llanelli Star’s local correspondent and who died at Glangwili.
“The work of the hospital seems to have touched the lives of so many of us, including those at my other chapel in Salem in Llangennech.
“And, in fact, I have personal experience as I suffered meningitis and a thrombosis in the head. Without the care and dedication of our doctors and nurses, I would not be here today.”
Rev Jones added: “It was while I was out walking, recuperating from my illness, that I bumped in to Cor Meibion Llanelli’s musical director Eifion Thomas. Without any prompting from me, he suggested the choir do a charity concert.
“It was literally music to my ears as the choir had been very kind to me during my ministry at Ebenezer Chapel in Aberavon. After the terrible blast furnace tragedy at the Port Talbot steelworks in 2001, Cor Meibion rallied to the cause with a fund-raising concert which the people of the steel town found very moving indeed.
“As a chapel at Adulam, we have already raised more than £700 through a charity curry night at the Masala restaurant in West End, Llanelli. We have high hopes that this charity concert can do better than that!”
The concert starts at 7pm and tickets are available from Gerwyn Richards at Adulam Chapel, other chapel members and through Ysgol y Felin.
